Sample project: illustrative, not an actual client result

One English site, three new countries

An online retailer that already ships to the EU and wants to sell there properly, starting with Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Online retailer entering EU markets

The challenge

One English site serves every market. Prices show in one currency, search engines have no signal about which country a page is for, and the keyword research was only ever done in English.

How we’d approach it

  1. 01Recommend subfolders (/de/, /fr/, /nl/) on the existing domain, so the new markets start with the site’s existing authority.
  2. 02Research keywords separately in each market and language, not by translating the English list.
  3. 03Map hreflang for every page and version, with x-default pointing at the main English site.
  4. 04Brief the client’s translation vendor with localized keywords and terminology, then review the pages for search before launch.

Deliverables

  • · Site architecture plan for the new markets
  • · hreflang map
  • · Market keyword sets
  • · Localized page templates and translator briefs

What we’d measure

  • · Indexed pages per market
  • · Organic sessions per market
  • · hreflang errors reported in crawls and Search Console

Each market gets its own baseline and its own line in the report. Adding them together would hide the one that isn’t working.
