E-commerce SEO for stores tangled in filters, variants and thin categories
A store runs into SEO problems a brochure site never meets. Filter combinations spawn pages nobody searches for, one product lives at three addresses, and category pages carry a product grid and no words. Shopify, WooCommerce and custom builds each get there by a different route, so the fixes differ too.
Platform pitfalls we look for first
Not every store has all of these. Most have at least two.
Shopify
- Products reachable at /products/ and at /collections/…/products/, with internal links pointing at the longer one
- Tag-filtered collection pages being crawled and indexed
- Apps that inject scripts on every page, including the ones they aren’t used on
- ?variant= URLs and their canonicals
WooCommerce
- Attribute and filter parameters creating crawlable page combinations
- Plugin overlap: two SEO plugins, three caching layers, each overriding the others
- Paginated category pages canonicalized to page one
- Thin product tag archives indexed by default
Faceted navigation, any platform
- Deciding which filter combinations deserve their own indexable page (some do: “black running shoes” is a real search)
- Handling the rest with the right mix of canonicals, noindex and crawl rules, not one blanket fix
- Sold-out and discontinued product pages, and what each one should become
- Category pages with no introduction, no internal links and no reason to rank
